Mayor Brandon Johnson Announces Juneteenth Task Force Members
Why We Care NFP Founder and Executive Director, Tanya Watkins, has been appointed to the Chicago Reparations Task Force by Mayor Brandon Johnson. Watkins joins a 40-member task force composed of community leaders, individuals with lived experience, and representatives of organizations that serve, represent, or advocate for Black communities. The task force will support the development of Chicago’s first Reparations Study, aimed at identifying and addressing key areas of harm in need of redress, including housing, policing, incarceration, education, health, and economic development.

Chicago State University "Re-Imagining CSU’s 95th Street Redevelopment" Community Table
Why We Care NFP is proud to announce that Executive Director Tanya Watkins has been selected as a member of the Chicago State University "Re-Imagining CSU’s 95th Street Redevelopment" Community Table. The project aims to revamp the CSU campus and the 95th Street corridor from Cottage Grove to Halsted, with a strong focus on community input and engagement. Tanya will serve as a community voice in the redevelopment process. We are proud to see her join this important table of leaders and changemakers.

Our Purpose
Support Low-Income Communities and Group Homes
We aim to assist those in need including helping with childcare, teaching financial literacy, and providing scholarships, job training, entrepreneurial mentorship, and access to sustainable employment opportunities.
Bridge the Benefits Cliff
We work to ensure that low-income populations have access to resources to help bridge the gap between income from a new job and loss of public benefits so they are not in danger of falling over the benefits cliff.
Celebrate Community
Our inclusive approach means that everyone can participate in our community celebrations, where we champion the diversity of expressions and uplift local community traditions.

Our Impact
Purses with a Purpose
A quarterly collection and donation of gently used purses containing personal care and laundry items to a local women’s substance abuse rehabilitation center.
Holiday Share
Fulfilling Christmas wish lists for kids and adults since 2018, each holiday season 3 families are adopted and given gifts of toys, food, small appliances, and clothing. For our annual Christmas in July event we serviced over 200 families in underserved communities in Chicago
Feed & Clothe
Between 2018 and 2023 our organization has fed and provided warm items such as gloves, scarves, and hats to over 450 people experiencing homelessness during harsh Chicago winters.

Our Goals
Spring & Summer 2025
Address the economic and community development issues by providing financial literacy, re-entry, and homeownership workshops; and entrepreneur cohorts. Tour colleges and universities with 3 teen moms. Host the Annual Christmas in July event in the Altgeld Gardens community as a way to support and raise awareness around environmental justice issues affecting the area.
Winter 2025
Provide over 500 homeless and veterans with meals and warm weather items.
